Your one-day tour of the gateway of the Thar should start at the Mehrangarh Fort. Built on a mountain at an elevation of 410 feet, the fort is a remarkable architectural wonder. Spanning over approximately 5 km of the hill, the fort is guarded by seven gates: Victory Gate, Fateh Gate, Gopal Gate, Bhairon Gate, Dedh Kamagra Gate, Marti Gate, and Loha Gate. Built over 500 years ago, the fort features some spectacular sections, including Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Daulat Khana, Sheesh Mahal, and Sileh Khan.
The next stop of the day should be the Taj Mahal of Mewar, Jaswant Thada. The site is a marble marvel, surrounded by lush greenery and the tranquil Jaswant Lake. The structure is a testament to the remarkable Rajasthani culture and art, which is intricately engraved within it. Named after Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, it was built by his son, Maharaja Sardar Singh, in 1899.
Another amazing structure is the Umaid Bhawan Palace, a true epitome of how regal history combines with modern charm. The palace is a multifaceted structure, comprising an open compound for visitors while also housing one of the largest residential compounds in the world, where the royal family of Jodhpur resides. Constructed in the Beaux-Arts style, the palace features two wings adorned with exquisite carpentry crafted from golden yellow sandstone, Makrana marble, and Burmese teak wood.
Jodhpur royal families are known for their gandeour and sacrifice. The brave hearts have courageously safeguarded the long-standing traditions, and all of that can be experienced at the Sardar Government Museum. This museum was built in 1909 in what is now the Umaid Bhawan Public Gardens. There you can explore over 400 sculptures, 10 antique inscriptions, thousands of miniature paintings, terracotta artwork, ancient coins, metallic objects, arms, stone sculptures, inscriptions and many other artifacts.
Located approximately 10 kilometers north of Jodhpur, the village of Mandore served as the capital of the Maharajas of Marwar before it was abandoned for safer locations. The original structure of the ex-capital differs from the typical Marwari style, which often features umbrella-shaped monuments; instead, it was built in the style of a Hindu temple. Housing the “The Shrine of the Three Hundred Million Gods”, the spot is famous among travellers for its high rock terrace and beautifully decorated images of various Hindu Gods.
A trip to Jodhpur cannot be over without a shopping spree at the old city clock tower. Built by Maharaja Sardar Singh, the tower is approximately 100 years old and is one of the most significant landmarks in the city. Now, this historic tower is surrounded by a bustling market, known as the Sardar Market, from which you can purchase spices, sweets, silver, handicrafts, and artifacts.
